“I thought I could take whatever time I needed.”

Howard had come to my hotel, and from the rate at which he was adding to his bar tab, he was reacting to a dressing down by some superior.

“I thought so, too. But word has come down that Chen’s accounts need to be squared. I assume you’ve found something; I’m just waiting for you to wrap it up.”

I took a sip from my own drink. Howard was impatient, but I wasn’t responsible for making him feel better: I was responsible for doing the investigation I was being paid for.

“I still haven’t got all the facts.”

“I would’ve thought it was pretty straightforward.”

“If it was, you wouldn’t have hired me.”

“I didn’t want—”

“Look, Don. You might think you can do my job better than I can, but someone with a bigger expense account and a nicer suit than you thinks otherwise. I’m done when I’m done, and when I’m ready to make my report you’ll be the first to know. Got it?”

“If I could just have an estimate—”

“You don’t really like Martin Chen, do you?”

“He’s never had much use for me, I’ll say that.”

I can see why, I thought, but didn’t say it. “Honestly, I have no interest in getting in between you and Martin Chen. I’m pretty well informed of what’s going on, and I’ll have word for you—and for CoDevCo—soon. I won’t tell you how to do your job—” You have other folks to do that already, I thought, “—and you don’t tell me how to do mine.”

He left, but not happily. I was completely sure that I didn’t care.
